About Turnagain Pass

Turnagain Pass has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s when gold was discovered in the Kenai Peninsula. The pass was a route for prospectors traveling to the goldfields in Hope, Alaska. During World War II it was a vital military transportation route connecting Seward to Anchorage. In the 1970s the state developed the pass for recreation, and today it is a mecca for winter sports. Turnagain Pass lies within the Chugach National Forest, established in 1907 by President Theodore Roosevelt — the second-largest national forest in the United States, home to moose, bear, ptarmigan and bald eagles.
